Eric Church shares the reasons behind his recent hiatus and the life saving surgery he underwent.

Eric Church is the latest cover star for Rolling Stone and he has now revealed a recent health scare. The “Springsteen” singer took the summer of 2017 off from playing stadium shows but never publicly announced why until now. The artist has now revealed that during that time, he was actually in major rehabilitation and physical therapy from an emergency surgery he had.

Mid 2017, Church underwent surgery to remove a blood clot brought on from a birth defect. The country star explains that he was born with a birth defect he did not know he had that puts his top rib too close to his collar bone. The singer explained the situations to Rolling Stone stating, “There’s a major vein that runs through there, and when I would raise my arm, it would pinch it and damage the vein.“ The issue first began during the artist’s Holdin’ My Own Tour. Church remembers his hands often shaking, but he simply attributed it to nerves at the time. One particular night though, the artist realized that his arm was red and swollen and was not responding normally.

Church quickly made his way to a hospital where an ultra-sound revealed the blood clot.

"I said, ‘Can it kill me?’” Church remembers. “And [the doctor] said, ‘Today.’”

Luckily, the first surgery went well and Church’s top rib was removed in a second surgery shortly after. The singer was planning on taking the summer off to relax anyways and is now doing much better. He can still play guitar and has recently announced a new album, Desperate Man, which is set to be released October 5, 2018.
