Luke Bryan is one busy country star! In honor of his newly appointed position as a judge on the American Idol reboot, Bryan visited a few talk shows in New York to discuss everything from music to fellow judges to what's really in his thermos on the set (hint - it's not coffee!).
Bryan sat down with Good Morning America yesterday, where he "spilled the dirt" on fellow American Idol judges and singer-songwriters, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry.
The “Light It Up" singer explained that although Richie is “literally the most genuine, kindest person," Bryan was actually intimidated by him the first time they met face-to-face! The two had previously met at a joint performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, where Bryan recalls telling Richie “Man, I'm about to faint being around you." In regards to Richie's judging skills, Bryan was in awe of the experiences Richie brought to the entire process. “He's like, 'Back when I was watching Whitney [Houston] and Diana [Ross] sing, and we're like…" Bryan explained. “He drops these names like, it's normal life for Lionel."
As for pop-star Katy Perry, Bryan revealed that she actually keeps a whole snack bar with her, complete with cheesy Ritz crackers, Doritos, and even fruit snacks, as she tends to get “hangry" on set! “Katy's gonna be so mad at me when this gets back," joked the country singer. “But we can see Katy when it's snack time – 'I need my snacks!'"
Bryan also shared how the judging process has been a learning experience for him. “It's been inspirational for me. It makes me want to get back in the studio and work harder because you see truly wonderfully talented people and it inspires you."
Continuing his promo rounds, the country superstar also paid a visit to Live with Kelly and Ryan, alongside Ryan Seacrest. Not only did Luke Bryan speak about his humble beginnings, Seacrest chimed in with a behind the scenes story. Seacrest began telling the story of how one Saturday where they had been working “many, many" hours, and the host noticed Bryan with a thermos of what he thought was coffee. He then gave the reins to the country singer to finish the story, where he then revealed to the audience that he did indeed drink a cold one to help him get through that long day.
“I had a beer. One beer. Hey, I figure all my fans drink beer and listen to me. I figure, I can sit back, have a beer, watch some contestants," Bryan joked.
On the other hand, Live host Kelly Ripa was interested in the singer's origin story, and how he transitioned from a life on a rural peanut farm to becoming a country megastar. Watch below to see how Bryan went from being in a drama class in high school to selling out shows across the country!
Bryan's last stop in New York was at Late Night With Seth Meyers, where in addition to an appearance, he also gave a performance of his hit song “Hooked On It", complete with a live band. In his interview, Bryan talked about his experience as a judge on the Idol reboot, including his judging style and “anxiety about having to eliminate competitors". Host Seth Meyers asked Bryan if he consulted The Voice judge and fellow country singer Blake Shelton for advice.
“In the country world – I love touring. I love getting on the bus, rolling down the road, hanging with my buds, going and playing shows," explained the "Hooked On It" singer. “Blake was excited because he wanted to see my reaction to this whole other segment. TV has its own little lane."
