When you first hear Dan + Shay's latest single “Tequila," the song deceptively prepares you for a new party anthem. On the contrary, the country duos' new tune is a brooding track full of longing and somber nostalgia that sucks you in with the first few notes (or drops).
In true country fashion, the boys' wanted their single to tell a story in a unique way, utilizing the idea of tequila as a trigger for memories rather than a good time. “At first, when you hear that title, you think like party song, uptempo, feel good, like, 'Let's drink tequila and get crazy,' " says Dan Smyers, who co-wrote and co-produced the song. “But you know, typical Nashville songwriter, my brain goes off, and I'm like, 'What if we make it a sad song?' " Smyers adds, “Senses are the ultimate nostalgia triggers. Whether it's smell or taste, they take you right back. Like anytime I drink Coors Lite or smell Coors Lite, it feels like I'm at a baseball game with my dad when I'm a little kid."
To help promote the lead track from their upcoming album, Dan + Shay paid a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform “Tequila" in front of an excited studio audience. The duo played with their band in front of a screen that incorporated visual elements from their lyrics, such as a sorority t-shirt, a bible and the Colorado mountains.
