Carrie Underwood officially returned for the fifth consecutive year as the face and voice of Sunday Night Football on NBC. This year's intro and song include a few renewed changes that bring a fresh feel for the new season.
The video begins with Underwood stomping through the city singing the rendition of “Somethin' Bad," her Platinum-certified duet with Miranda Lambert. According to The Boot, Underwood worked with the original writers of the song, Chris DeStefano, Brett James and Priscilla Renea, to create relevant lyrics for the show:
“Stand up and cheer / Stomp your feet, start clappin' / NBC Sunday Night about to happen / America's game been waitin' all day / Giants and the boys have come to play / Al, Cris, Michele to turn it up / It's the NFL can't get enough / We've got a battle tonight, a winner take all / Nothin' like Sunday night football / It's out of control / Get set, let's go / The clocks winding down / Let's rock and roll"
The intro also includes appearances from star NFL players, including Jason Pierre-Paul, Patrick Peterson, Dak Prescott, Von Miller, Khalil Mack, Derek Carr, Julio Jones, Travis Kelce, Dont'a Hightower and Antonio Brown.
In addition to continuing her run on NBC's Sunday Night Football, Underwood wrote another song just for NBC football that will be released in anticipation of the February bowl game. The track, “The Champion," has received approval from her husband Mike Fisher, previous captain of the Nashville Predators. In an article with CMT, Underwood explains, “My husband loved it. He would listen to it before playoff games. He was like 'I want everyone to hear it!' and I had to tell him, 'You can't do that. You can't play it in the locker room. I'm sorry.' But that was a good indicator that we were on the right track."
