MegaPick: Josh Abbott Band
The guys released their album 'Until My Voice Goes Out' and it's all about second chances!
Josh Abbott Band's new album, Until My Voice Goes Out, is officially released and we can't get enough of it! It is all about love, second chances and moving forward. Abbott, well versed in all of those areas, has been on quite the rollercoaster lately with the passing of his father this year and the welcoming of his new baby girl in March.
According to Rolling Stone, Abbott had to leave his band in the studio during the core of the recording process so that he could tend to his father. Thankfully, Abbott was able to play his title song “Until My Voice Goes Out" for his dad right before his passing. Abbott said, “It was the last song he heard on this earth. And he smiled and he was really happy…"
The new album, produced by Dwight Baker, is made up of 14 tracks that sonically incorporate instruments like pedal steel, banjo, fiddle, as well as a few new additions like horn and string arrangements coined by Tony Bennett and Rob Mathes. Each element is woven throughout the arrangements of every song on the album. Some of our favorite songs are “Girl Down in Texas," “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" and “Ain't My Daddy's Town." “Girl Down In Texas" is a sweet ballad narrative about falling in love again and being hopeful in the future. (“She's a sunday morning stroll at the park by the lake / The answer to my prayers when I started to lose faith / When I'm on the lonely road chasin' my dreams / There's a girl down in Texas waitin' on me")
“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is the catchy sing-along of the album, about hard days made worse in the name of bad luck and a little bit of alcohol. (“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot / Why the hell not / Say what I'm thinkin' / 'Cause when I'm drinkin / It's hard to stop once I start / like the guy next to me talkin' off my ear / And I just came in here to have a cold beer / but guess what / It's not / It's hot / Whiskey Tango Foxtrot")
As stated in Rolling Stone, “Aint My Daddy's Town," was a last minute addition to the album in honor of Abbott's father. It has a slow tempo beat with lyrics that will have you in tears by the end. (“This ain't my daddy's town no more / Somebody's gotta feel those boots he wore / I ain't sayin' I'm the man he was / But it's my turn to carry on what he loved / This ain't my daddy's town no more") Ending the album right after this song with “Epilogue: Farewell Father" is a special way to honor his father through his music. The band is hitting the road in support of the album, kicking off their tour tonight in Denton, Texas. Their live shows are nothing short of incredible, so be sure to catch them out on the road this fall!
