If you rewind twenty five years, you'll see a young George Strait approached to be the lead actor in the feature film, Pure Country. He would also get to create the soundtrack for the film. At first, Strait was somewhat hesitant about acting, but after some persuasion he agreed to the role.
In an interview with New Yorker Radio Hour's On the Record with Kelefa Sanneh, Strait disclosed he “was persuaded by the producer Jerry Weintraub, and by Colonel Tom Parker, the former manager of Elvis Presley… After a concert in Las Vegas, Parker told Strait how important Hollywood had been to Presley. 'Elvis hated making those movies,' he said—but they transformed him from a pop star to an icon."'
By following through with the creation of the film, Strait was transformed into an icon. He became a defining voice of country music, and the Pure Country soundtrack became his highest selling album, accomplishing a RIAA 6x platinum certification.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of Pure Country, Strait is releasing a limited-edition vinyl on September 15, 2017. The record-breaking soundtrack was never released on vinyl, so this is sure to be a collector's item for any country music fan.
Strait will also be performing two shows in Las Vegas September 1-2 at the T-Mobile Arena to spotlight the album. The nights will for sure be full of reminiscing and nostalgia for both the fans and Strait, as we all reflect on the cherished stories behind the movie and songs.
To coincide with the celebration of this iconic event, an independent movie theater chain, Alamo Drafthouse, will be presenting the feature film in 28 of their theatres throughout the month of August. If you can't make it to Strait's concerts in Vegas, this will be the perfect opportunity to venture through your best memories from the movie, all while celebrating with Strait and fans in spirit.
